I was very unsure what
kind of house and reception we were going to get at the Rodale
Room's Jazz Series at Allentown Symphony Hall. After all, I am known
as a big band leader, and this was a septet. Also, I have not played
much in the Lehigh Valley lately under my own name. Well, guess
what--we sold the place out and had several standing ovations. I saw
parents of my childhood friends there. A great crowd and magnificent
playing by Marty Mellinger, Brian Bortz, Paul Wells, Mike Trach, and
Dale Orris. Wow! And Robin Work's vocals--fantastic!
I
had a great time playing with Bill Watrous at the Los Angeles
Farmers Market Jazz Series. We had our biggest and most responsive
crowd yet, and I felt the most relaxed ever. What fun--because the
air travel surely was not. |
